Goat on a farm
Small ruminants · Rumen stability & fermentation efficiency

Sheep & Goats

BIOSMARTPRO® is a complementary feed for small ruminants, developed to support rumen function in dairy ewes and does and in growing lambs and kids. It applies a microbiome-focused, functional-nutrition approach that works with the animal’s existing ration rather than replacing it.

The aim is straightforward: help the rumen convert the diet already on the farm into usable metabolic energy more efficiently, supporting stable fermentation across lactation and growth. BIOSMARTPRO® is used alongside balanced rationing and sound husbandry.

Small ruminants are particularly sensitive to dietary transitions and to swings in rumen fermentation. BIOSMARTPRO® is designed to support the microbial community already present, rather than to overhaul it.

  • Microbial coordination — rumen microbial communities function through coordinated interactions rather than isolated processes.
  • Fermentation efficiency — designed to support productive rumen fermentation dynamics.
  • Productive utilisation — connects fermentation biology with the productive utilisation of the existing ration for milk and growth.

By supporting fermentation stability, the approach is relevant to the periods of highest metabolic demand — early lactation and rapid growth — where rumen balance matters most.

BIOSMARTPRO® is included in the daily ration as a complementary feed. In practice:

  • Introduce gradually and feed consistently every day.
  • Use alongside a balanced ration, clean water and sound management.
  • Maintain during periods of highest demand (transition, early lactation, finishing).

Inclusion is set per flock/herd according to the ration and production stage. For a farm-specific recommendation, contact our technical team, or explore the interactive rumen and fermentation tools.

Where the controlled evidence sits. BIOSMARTPRO®’s controlled study data to date is in dairy cattle. In small ruminants, use is guided by the same rumen rationale — supporting fermentation efficiency and stability — and is supported by on-farm observations that naturally vary between farms.

We deliberately keep controlled trial data separate from field observations. Farm-reported outcomes depend on ration, genetics, management and environment, and should be read as field experience rather than controlled results.
